ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I want to thank the University of California at Berkeley. In 2009, the university agreed to house a research unit dedicated to academic study of right-wing movements, history, and ideology. The Berkeley Center for Right-Wing Studies, of which I am the founding director, remains a unique institution, and it has fostered the emergence of a robust field of study both in the United States and abroad. The Center survives entirely on private donations, and I wish to offer the most profound thanks to the many individuals who have contributed to our work. As the saying goes, you know who you are.

For ten years Christine Trost was the key person designing the Center’s programs and making the enterprise succeed. Beyond that, Christine is an intellectual force, and my own thinking developed in ongoing collaboration with her. Dozens of visiting scholars, symposium presenters, and graduate students have been though the Center over the years, and they have been an unending source of stimulation and intellectual challenge. My thanks to all of them.

My closest intellectual relationships over the past years have been with Troy Duster, Harry Levine, and Yiannis Gabriel. My work on this book and otherwise has drawn on what have been inexhaustibly fruitful conversations with each of them. Harry and Troy read and commented on this book throughout its writing, for which I have been intensely grateful. Arlie Hochschild read the full manuscript, offering acute observations. I also benefited from comments on portions of the work read by Eliah Bures and Emily Bruce.

This project never would have got off the ground without the work and encouragement of my literary agent, Andy Ross. Thank you, Andy. At The New Press my thanks go to Carl Bromley, who believed in the book from the outset, and championed it despite its sometimes all too slow progress. Thanks, too, to Emily Albarillo, who brought the project home.

I’ve written Empire of Resentment at a time of global and domestic political upheaval, which the book addresses head on. For as long as I can remember in the United States, both left and right have more caricatured one another than seriously tried to understand the other’s thinking and actions. These days, this incomprehension is increasingly resolving into a combustible gulf between liberal democracy and nationalism—a gulf that, ominously, is often labeled tribal. For the left, thinking on the right appears more baffling and impenetrable than ever before in our lifetimes. An overriding goal of my work has always been to make sense of right-wing thought to those outside it. Empire of Resentment is the attempt to accomplish that goal in this fraught historical moment.
